I saw Tune-Yards this past Wednesday night at The Irenic and they were awesomeeeeee (which is an understatement). I've been kind of stuck up in North County San Diego so driving south and just getting my head out of the more conservative county was MUCH needed.
So from what I gathered, the Irenic is actually a church! Who knew they'd host/be a venue for amazing underground-ish bands. The crowd was mostly hipsters but I let it slide. I was just as excited to hear the band live. The band had a playful and energetic feel and the crowd was totally digging it. Garbus is just as amazing as she sounds on record and the rest of the band was just as fun and talented! (Props to the backing vocals!)
In case you haven't heard Tune-Yards' stuff yet, here's "Water Fountain" - the first single off the new album Nikki Nack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbiFcPhccu8&feature=kp
Tune-Yards ended the night with "Water Fountain" - I saw Garbus break out in a smile when the whole crowd was singing right along with her. I can't begin to imagine just how amazing that must feel.
The opening act was Sylvan Esso - I'd never heard of them before but they were uhhh-mazing! Totally grabbed their CD before I left. I actually spoke to Meath on my way out and she seemed totally sweet and totally bad ass. Check out "Play It Right" from their self-titled album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnBjwrRmo2U
SE is actually playing this saturday at "Make Music Pasadena" (
